254 SMO Stainless Steel is a super austenitic stainless steel alloy, with very high end molybdenum and nitrogen content with low carbon content. Alloy 254 SMO exhibits outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, stress cracking, and fatigue corrosion. Due to high amount of Chromium, nitrogen and molybdenum content, Alloy 254 is considerably tougher than the usual austenitic grades with strength almost two-times that of 300 series stainless steels. It is also known for its high ductility and impact strength. Also Alloy 254 SMO is been regularly used in high chloride environments, due to its high level of molybdenum and nickel.

 

SMO 254 has been found to be more cost-effective replacement for high nickel and titanium alloys. It has a Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PREN) of > 42.5, and is also known to possess excellent workability as well. Alloy 254 has very low carbon content, hence it had very little risk of carbide precipitation during heating. Alloy 254 was specially developed for use in seawater and other aggressive chloride-bearing environments. Hence it possesses excellent resistance in water containing chloride and is suitable for use in sea water, as it can be exposed to such conditions for longer periods without getting affected from crevice corrosion. UNS S321254 possesses excellent weldability, which should be done without pre-heating. If done exactly, there will be no requirement for any subsequent heat treatment. Alloy 254 has low thermal conductivity and high thermal expansion. Welding without filler metals results in poor strength properties.
