Nickel 201 is Commercially Pure Nickel with Low Carbon developed to work principally in reducing or neutral environments.
Nickel 201 is a 99.6% commercially pure wrought nickel, but with a lower carbon content to prevent embrittlement by inter-granular carbon at elevated temperatures. Lower carbon content also reduces hardness, making Nickel 201 particularly suitable for cold-formed items. Nickel 201 provides highly ductile mechanical properties across a wide temperature range. It provides corrosion resistance in neutral to moderately reducing environments. Nickel Alloy 201 is ferromagnetic. Alloy 201 provides high thermal and electrical conductivity in comparison to nickel-base alloys, stainless and low alloy steels. Because of its low carbon content (.02% max.) Nickel 201 may be considered for service above 600°F (316°C). Alloy 201 suitable for forming by deep drawing and spinning into combustion boats and the continuous stamping of strip into electronic components.
Alloy 201 can also be brazed and soldered. Nickel 201 is solid solution strengthened, commercially pure wrought nickel material with good mechanical properties over a wide range of temperatures and excellent resistance to many corrosives, in particular hydroxides. Nickel 201 was a modification of Nickel 200 to control carbon (.02 max) which keeps it from being embrittled by intergranular precipitates at temperatures of 600° F to 1400° F in many processes. Nickel 201 has good resistance to a number of acids and alkalies, however Ni-201 is majorly used in electrolytic extraction of caustic soda from salt solutions and the subsequent concentration processes. With excellent resistance to distilled and natural waters creating a tenacious oxide film Nickel Alloy 201 is used in the food processing industry. Nickel 201 Alloy has a low annealed hardness and very low work-hardening rate. Those who use Nickel 201 Alloy find it desirable in deep drawing, spinning, and coining. In addition, it can be applied to corrosion-resistant equipment including but not limited to: caustic evaporators, spun anodes, and laboratory crucibles.
