A fitting is used in pipe systems to connect straight pipe or tubing sections, adapt to different sizes or shapes and for other purposes, such as regulating fluid flow. Pipe Fittings are used in a piping system to change direction or function, which is mechanically joined to the system. The simplest way to achieve this is to bend the pipe in the direction required, but this process will stretch and thin the outer wall of the pipe whilst thickening and wrinkling, the inner wall of the pipe. This results in flow resistance and accelerated wall erosion. Hastelloy C22 Pipe Fittings are manufactured and finished according to international standards ASTM B366 UNS N06022, ASME B16.9, ANSI B16.9, ASME B16.28, ANSI B16.28, ANSI B16.25, MSS-SP-43 & MSS SP-75. Hastelloy Elbow Fittings—Hastelloy Pipe Elbows are installed between two lengths of pipe or tube allowing a change of direction by 180°, 90° or 45°. The ends are machined for Butt Welding when the two ends differ in size, it is called a Reducer or, Reducing Elbow. Pipe Fitting Elbows are available as 180° elbows, 90° elbows or 45° elbows in 1D, 1.5D, 2D, 3D, 5D, 6D, 8D, 10D radius as short and long radius elbows. All ASTM B366 elbows are mandrel formed to ensure consistency.

Hastelloy Return Bend Fittings— Bends are similar to elbows with different bending radiuses. ASTM B366 Bends are supplied as long radius return bends and short radius return bends.

The surface of the stub end has a phonographic serrated gasket surface which prevents leakage at the joint. Using stub ends allows sections of the line to be opened for cleaning, inspection or quick replacement, etc, without the need to re-weld.

Properties of Hastelloy C22 alloy

Hastelloy C22 Cold Forming

Cold forming of Hastelloy C22 is performed by standard methods as high-nickel alloys. The work-hardening rate of the alloy is done through cold hardening process. Hastelloy C22 is some-what softer in the annealed condition and requires lower forces for deformation.The Alloy is treated with cold picking liquid solutions.There is the formation of the oxide film on the Hastelloy C22 product form. The cold forming process of the Hastelloy is done by bathing the element in caustic solution with the molten state.The process is further followed by acid pickling at extremely high temperature. The descaling process is one of the cold forming process involving three steps:

  • —The Descaling salt bath process.
  • —The Sodium hydride reducing salt bath process.
  • —The DGS oxidising salt bath process.

Hastelloy C22 Hot Forming

Alloys can be hot worked into multiple shapes and forms.The hot forming should be done in a temperature within 1600°F and 2250°F (870°C-1230°C). Their resistance to deformation increases because of the less temperature in hot working range. Hot working temperatures for Hastelloy C22 are very high so a necessary precaution must be taken while performing the hot forming process. After annealing is done it should be quickly followed by cold quenching which will help the metal to retain its property.

Hastelloy C22 Machining

Hastelloy C22 is classified as moderate to difficult when machining, however these alloys can be machined using conventional production methods at satisfactory rates. During the machining processes these alloys work harden rapidly, generate high heat during cutting, weld to the cutting tool surface and offer high resistance to metal removal because of their high shear strengths.

Hastelloy C22 Welding

Hastelloy C22 is known to have good weldability. The most common welding processes used to weld the Hastelloy C22 are the gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW / “TIG”), gas metal arc welding (GMAW / “MIG”), and shielded metal arc welding (SMAW / “Stick”) processes. In addition to these common arc welding processes, other welding processes such plasma arc welding (PAW), resistance spot welding (RSW), laser beam welding (LBW), and electron beam welding (EBW) are used. Submerged arc welding (SAW) is generally discouraged as this process is characterized by high heat input to the base metal, which promotes distortion, hot cracking, and precipitation of secondary phases that can be detrimental to material properties and performance.

Hastelloy C22 Heat Treatment

Heat treatment is done in various procedures which involve various process. Firstly after solution annealing treatment followed by quenching to lock in the high-temperature structure. After that cooled metal is used for the further working process.
