Threaded fasteners are the principal devices used for assembling components and they are usually grouped into three main categories: Threads can be either external or internal:
External Thread: External threads are on the outside of a member (such as the threads of bolts and screws). A chamfer on the end of the screw thread makes it easier to engage it into a hole or a nut. An external thread is usually cut using a die or a lathe.
Internal Thread: Internal threads are on the inside of a member (such as the threads of nuts and holes). Usually, threaded holes have a chamfer on the side from which the screw will enter to make its engagement easier. An internal thread is usually cut using a tap.

Hastelloy Screws: Screws are used to join two mating parts together and similar to bolts, they have the head on one end and threads on the other end. However, screws usually have longer threads than bolts, also they can be made with slotted heads. Screws are further divided into two sub-categories; Cap Screws and Machine Screws. Machine screws are generally smaller in size than cap screws and they are used for screwing into thin materials.
Hastelloy Setscrews: Setscrews are a special type of screws that usually does not have a head and they are used to prevent rotation or movement between parts (such as a shaft and a collar). A Setscrew is driven through one member such that it will apply a compressive force on the other member while a screw or a bolt clamps the two members together.
Hastelloy Studs: A Stud is a rod that is threaded on both ends and joins two mating parts. A nut may be used on one end.

Washers: Washers are commonly used under the heads of bolts and screws and they are used under nuts as well. Properties of Hastelloy C22 alloy
Hastelloy C22 Cold Forming
Cold forming of Hastelloy C22 is performed by standard methods as high-nickel alloys. The work-hardening rate of the alloy is done through cold hardening process. Hastelloy C22 is some-what softer in the annealed condition and requires lower forces for deformation.The Alloy is treated with cold picking liquid solutions.There is the formation of the oxide film on the Hastelloy C22 product form. The cold forming process of the Hastelloy is done by bathing the element in caustic solution with the molten state.The process is further followed by acid pickling at extremely high temperature. The descaling process is one of the cold forming process involving three steps:
- —The Descaling salt bath process.
- —The Sodium hydride reducing salt bath process.
- —The DGS oxidising salt bath process.
Hastelloy C22 Hot Forming
Alloys can be hot worked into multiple shapes and forms.The hot forming should be done in a temperature within 1600°F and 2250°F (870°C-1230°C). Their resistance to deformation increases because of the less temperature in hot working range. Hot working temperatures for Hastelloy C22 are very high so a necessary precaution must be taken while performing the hot forming process. After annealing is done it should be quickly followed by cold quenching which will help the metal to retain its property.
Hastelloy C22 Machining
Hastelloy C22 is classified as moderate to difficult when machining, however these alloys can be machined using conventional production methods at satisfactory rates. During the machining processes these alloys work harden rapidly, generate high heat during cutting, weld to the cutting tool surface and offer high resistance to metal removal because of their high shear strengths.
Hastelloy C22 Welding
Hastelloy C22 is known to have good weldability. The most common welding processes used to weld the Hastelloy C22 are the gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW / “TIG”), gas metal arc welding (GMAW / “MIG”), and shielded metal arc welding (SMAW / “Stick”) processes. In addition to these common arc welding processes, other welding processes such plasma arc welding (PAW), resistance spot welding (RSW), laser beam welding (LBW), and electron beam welding (EBW) are used. Submerged arc welding (SAW) is generally discouraged as this process is characterized by high heat input to the base metal, which promotes distortion, hot cracking, and precipitation of secondary phases that can be detrimental to material properties and performance.
Hastelloy C22 Heat Treatment
Heat treatment is done in various procedures which involve various process. Firstly after solution annealing treatment followed by quenching to lock in the high-temperature structure. After that cooled metal is used for the further working process.
