Brass has higher malleability than bronze or zinc. The relatively low melting point of brass (900 to 940 °C, 1,650 to 1,720 °F, depending on composition) and its flow characteristics make it a relatively easy material to cast. Cartridge Brass referred to as spinning brass, spring brass, CW505L / CZ106 is an alpha brass, with zinc content of 30% and rest being copper. CW505L / CZ106 exhibits an excellent combination of strength and ductility for the alpha phase brasses. C26000 grade is used for its outstanding deep drawing properties and excellent cold workability. C260 Brass is not very machinable, but is a great combination of formability and workability. C26000 is used for architecture, drawn and spun containers and shapes, electrical terminals and connectors, door handles, plumbers hardware. C26000 has good corrosion resistance to weathering and very good resistance to many chemicals. It may undergo dezincification in stagnant or slowly moving salt solutions, brackish water or acidic solutions.

Basis Brass commonly referred to as CW508L / CZ108, is a 37% zinc containing brass. Predominantly an alpha brass it is one of the most popular grades due to its hot and cold working capabilities. C27200 is often used for general purpose applications and forming operations when very good bending properties are required. It also offers a very good general corrosion resistance in many natural atmospheres, a reasonable machinability and good cold heading properties.

Naval Brass commonly known as CW712R / CZ112 is due to its improved corrosion resistance in marine environments. The general composition is 60% copper, 39% zinc with a 1% tin addition which gives an improved corrosion resistance and also gives a harder and stronger duplex structure to improve the mechanical properties. The improvement in corrosion resistance enables the material to be used in both seawater and other mildly aggressive media, C46400 also offers better strength levels than many of the basic alpha brasses combined with an excellent hot formability. Used primarily in applications where corrosion resistance is important, the material has a small amount of tin added to help deal with corrosion, especially in seawater.

Free Machining Brass with European grade CW614N / CZ121 consisting of a duplex structure and a 3% lead addition. The particles of lead are finely dispersed throughout the microstructure and acts as both a lubricant and a chip breaker to give the alloy its free machining characteristics. The machinability rating of 100% for C36000 is the standard against which all other copper alloys are rated. It is the most widely used of all the brasses due to its suitability for high speed machining operations and also the manufacture of intricate parts. Its combination of machinability, thread rolling and knurling characteristics, combined with its good strength, an ease of soldering / brazing and a high resistance to corrosion makes it the ideal choice for many brass components throughout industry. The presence of lead in the alloy creates a highly machinable material that can easily be cut and shaped into whatever you need. Free Machining Brass is not so good, however, at forming operations.
