ASTM B407 - Seamless Pipes and Tube
ASTM B407 is a standard specification for Nickel-Iron-Chromium alloy seamless pipes and tubes. The ASTM B407 specification covers Incoloy 800 and Incoloy H/HT. It covers them in the form of cold-worked or hot-finished annealed seamless pipes and tubes. ASTM B407 Incoloy 800 Seamless Pipes and ASTM B407 Incoloy 800 Seamless Tubes are usually applicable in service temperature up to 1100 F or 593 C. Whereas, ASTM B407 Incoloy 800H/HT Seamless Pipes and ASTM B407 Incoloy 800H/HT Seamless Pipes are usually applicable in service temperature above 1100 F or 593 C where resistance to creep and rupture is required. They are annealed to produce controlled grain size required for optimum properties in this temperature range. These Incoloy alloys possess very high resistance to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking, and also exhibits good resistance to polythionic acid cracking. Hence, these pipes and tubes are highly applicable in high temperature petrochemical environments.
Scope And Manufacturing
As per ASTM B407 specifications ,the alloys should be heat treated at specified annealing temperatures and should adhere to the chemical composition limits for nickel, chromium, iron, manganese, carbon, copper, silicon, sulfur, aluminum, titanium, columbium, molybdenum, niobium, tantalum, phosphorus, tungsten, cobalt, nitrogen, and boron as specified in ASTM B407 specification. As nickel will alloy with most metals, it has wide solubility range with iron and chromium, making multiple possible combinations.

Mechanical Properties And Other Requirements:-As per ASTM B407 specifications, the material should undergo chemical analysis test, mechanical properties test, grain size test, and hydrostatic or Nondestructive Electric test and adhere to all the limit range as specified like yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation requirements. The pipes and tubes are subjected to hydrostatic tests to determine the allowable fiber stress and to detect significant discontinuities such as drilled hole and transverse tangential notch.

Dimension and Permissible Variation:-The cold-drawn pipes and tubes should adhere to ASTM B407 specification which includes being commercially straight, uniform in quality and temper, smooth, and free of bends, kinks, and other injurious imperfections.

Specimen Preparation: -
Tension test- The tubes in the final condition (temper) of production are taken as specimen for tension test, and are tested in the direction of fabrication. Tubes are tested in full tubular size or longitudinal strip with reduced gage lengths. The tension test should be performed on stress-relived tubes prior to annealing the ends.
Hardness test- The hardness test is performed on the inside of the tube near the end or on the specimen cut from the end.
Workman Ship, Finish and Appearance: -
ASTM B407 Seamless Pipes are individually covered under the specification of ASTM B407, so that the premium quality of the material is retained and there are no damages in the last stages of production. The pipe should be uniform in quality and temper, commercially straight, smooth and free of any imperfections.
Inspection: - The tubes should be inspected as agreed upon by the purchaser and the manufacturer.
Rejection and Rehearing: - The pipe not adhering to the ASTM B407 specification or to authorized modifications should be subjected to rejection. The rejected specimens should be preserved for not less than 3 weeks from test report, and the manufacturer may claim for rehearing within that stipulated time period.
If it is mentioned in purchase order or the contract, then the manufacturer should be able to produce a certificate stating that the material has been manufactured and tested and inspected again with respect to the specification. It should also note the test results of the specimen samples which meets the specification requirements, and should be displayed as and when required.
