ASTM B338 is a titanium seamless and welded tube with outer diameter 0.3mm-10mm. The seamless tubes outer diameter range from approx 0.60mm with wall thickness 3 to 40mm are produced on plug mills. The titanium seamless tube provides outstanding corrosion resistance to sea water.

Scope And Manufacturing

ASTM B338 covers titanium welded and seamless tube. These welded tube is formed by rolling plate and welding the seam (usually by Electric resistance welding ("ERW"), or Electric Fusion Welding ("EFW"). The weld flash can be removed from both inner and outer surfaces using a scarfing blade. The weld zone can also be heat-treated to make the seam less visible. Welded tube often has tighter dimensional tolerances than the seamless type, and can be cheaper to manufacture. There are a number of processes that may be used to produce ERW tubes. Each of these processes lead to coalescence or merging of steel components into tubes. Electric current is passed through the surfaces that have to be welded together; as the components being welded together resist the electric current, heat is generated which forms the weld. Pools of molten metal are formed where the two surfaces are connected as a strong electric current is passed through the metal; these pools of molten metal form the weld that binds the two abutted components.

Seamless tube is made from hollow billet by any cold reducing or cold drawing process that will yield a product meeting the requirements. Welded tube is made from flat-rolled product by an automatic arc-welding process. The welded tube is sufficiently cold worked to final size in order to transform the cast weld microstructure into a typical equiaxed microstructure in the weld upon subsequent heat treatment. Tubing shall withstand cracking, flattening under a load applied gradually at room temperature until the distance between the load platens is not more than the required height. Welded tube shall be subjected to a reverse flattening test.
