ASTM B165 Seamless pipe as the name suggests is a pipe without a seam or a weld-joint in contrast to Seam or Welded pipe. In a Seam or Welded pipe, the seam or the weld-joint is the weaker part of the pipe limiting the strength of the pipe to the strength of the weld-joint. Whereas the seamless pipe does not have any such joint and thus has uniform structure & strength all over the pipe body. Seamless tube is extruded and drawn from a billet. Thus the seamless pipe can withstand higher pressure, higher temperature, higher mechanical stress & corrosive atmosphere and find wide applications in Oil & Gas, Refinery, Petrochemical, Chemical, Fertilizer, Power, Automotive, Bearing, Mechanical & Structural applications.

Scope And Manufacturing

ASTM B165 specification covers nickel-copper alloy UNS N04400 in the form of cold-worked seamless pipe and tube. The material shall conform to the composition limits specified. Tension test, hydrostatic test, nondestructive electric test, and rounding method shall be done in accordance to the specified requirements. They are produced by two distinct methods which result in either a welded or seamless pipe. In both methods, raw steel is first cast into a more workable starting form. It is then made into a pipe by stretching the steel out into a seamless tube or forcing the edges together and sealing them with a weld.

Steel pipes and tubes can be manufactured in different methods, the main methods are electric resistance welding (ERW), fusion welding (EFW), double submerged arc welding (DSAW) and seamless pipe manufacturing (SMLS). The seamless pipe manufacturing process starts with the transformation of raw materials into steel bars. In different types of rolling mills steel bars are formed into a solid round shape, called billet, which is heated and pushed or pulled over a piercing rod producing a hollow tube or shell. Due to the heating production process seamless pipes are normalized and should have a consistent steel pattern throughout its range.
