Alloy 254 SMO Stainless Steel also known as 6Mo / 6Moly is highly alloyed super austenitic stainless steel with low carbon and high molybdenum content, designed for maximum resistance to pitting, stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion.
SMO 254 also known as 254 SMO, Alloy 254, 6Mo and 6 Moly Stainless Steel comes with UNS S31254 and WNR 1.4547. 254 SMO Stainless Steel offers chloride resistance superior to that of Alloy 20, Alloy 825 and Alloy G. Alloy 254 is compatible with the common austenitic stainless steels. It is often used as a replacement in critical components of larger constructions where Type 316L or 317L has failed by pitting, crevice attack, or chloride stress corrosion cracking. 6Moly is suitable for high chloride environments, such as brackish water, seawater, pulp mill bleach plants, and other chloride process streams. Stainless Steel 254 SMO also has very good resistance to stress corrosion cracking. In new construction, 254 SMO has been found in many cases to be a technically adequate and more cost effective substitute for high nickel and titanium alloys. Alloy 254 SMO is substantially stronger than the common austenitic grades, with strength nearly twice that of 300 series stainless steel, but is also characterized by high ductility and impact strength. 6Mo is readily fabricated and welded. Due to its high levels of molybdenum and nickel, Alloy 254 SMO is frequently used in high chloride environments like Petroleum production, saltwater handling, food processing and chemical processing equipment, pulp mill bleach systems, flue gas desulfurization scrubbers and tall oil distillation columns.
