Alloy 254 SMO Rolled Sheet Coil: Sheet Coils are flat products wound into rolls and having a rectangular cross-section, the width of which is much larger than the thickness. Hot Rolled Sheet Coil is produced from semifinished products (slabs or billets), which are reduced to certain thicknesses by rolling and annealing and wound into a roll. Cold Rolled Sheet Coil is produced by removing rust from a hot-rolled sheet by "pickling" it in a weak acid solution, then washing, brushing, drying, oiling and unrolling the sheet and finally performing cold-rolling by passing the sheet through a reducing mill under pressure and winding it into a roll. Cold-rolled steel Coil is a more highly finished product and has a smoother surface, greater dimensional accuracy (thickness, width, length) and greater strength. Properties of Alloy 254 SMO Stainless Steel
254 SMO Cold Forming
Cold working of SMO 254 can be carried out using all the traditional methods, however the process would be tough due to its high work hardening rate. The result will provide 254 SMO with increased strength and toughness.
254 SMO Hot Forming
Forging, upsetting and other operations relating to 254 SMO can be performed at 982 - 1149°C (1800 - 2100°F). To attain maximum corrosion resistant properties, it is advisable to perform post-process annealing.
254 SMO Machining
SMO 254 is quite tough to machine due to the extremely high work hardening rate and lack of sulfur content; however using sharp tools, overpowered machine tools, positive feeds, good amount of lubrication, and slow speeds tend to provide good machining results.
254 SMO Welding
Welding of stainless steel grade 254 SMO requires filler material without which it results in poor strength properties. Filler metals such as AWS A5.14 ERNiCrMo-3, and alloy 625 are recommended. Electrodes used in the process, have to match with AWS A5.11 ENiCrMo-12.
254 SMO Heat Treatment
254 SMO does not respond to heat treatment. Hardening is possible only through cold reduction.
